SUMMARY:The comfort of cosy crime
DESCRIPTION:Book here.\n\n\n\n\nWith the world gone to hell in a handbasket\, more and more readers are turning to cosy crime – sex and violence happen offstage\, the main investigator is usually an amateur sleuth\, and the story is set in a close-knit\, small community. Spearheading the investigations are often librarians\, retirees\, chefs\, or neighbours\, rather than professional police officers. Not too much gore!! Luckily\, Australian authors are on the mark. \n\n\n\nPenny Tangey\, Kate Solly\, and A.M. Stuart will be exploring the joys (and challenges) of cosy crime with Alison Goodman\, the multi-award-winning novelist and New York Times best-seller. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPenny Tangey’s first adult novel\, What Rhymes with Murder (Summit Books Australia)\, starts with exhausted new mother Frida attending a Baby Rhyme Time session at East Melbourne Library when a piercing scream is heard\, followed by the thump of a body. Before long\, Frida finds herself part of an unlikely group of sleuths investigating the murder.  \n\n\n\nPenny Tangey is a librarian and mother living in East Melbourne. Penny has worked as a researcher for TV quiz shows Hard Quiz and The Chase\, but she’s still terrible at trivia. She’s published a number of children’s books with UQP\, one of which\, As Fast as I Can (2020)\, won a Queensland Literary Award and the Readings Children’s Book Prize. Her latest middle-grade book\, Music Camp\, came out last year. More info here. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn Kate Solly’s latest book\, The Paradise Heights Miniature Railway Bust-Up\, something is amiss. And this suits Fleck Parker\, mother of a baby and cranky toddler\, just fine – she’s on the hunt for a new puzzle to solve. Expensive equipment and supplies have disappeared\, and nobody knows why. Who could possibly wish harm on a community group delivering Sunday afternoon fun on a fleet of jolly little engines? Will Fleck’s attempts to derail the thief land her on the wrong side of the tracks? \n\n\n\nKate Solly is a writer\, mother of six\, and really quite good at getting the bubbles out of plastic book wrap. While most of her time is spent finding lost shoes and investigating what’s making the car smell bad\, Kate frequently escapes to write entertaining things. She has penned many articles\, columns\, and reviews for various publications\, and is the author of Tuesday Evenings with the Copeton Craft Resistance and The Paradise Heights Craft Store Stitch-Up. When she is not writing\, she enjoys starting crochet projects and never finishing them. More info here. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA.M. Stuart is the creator of the popular Harriet Gordon Mystery series set in pre-World War I colonial Singapore. Harriet\, a resilient widow and former British suffragette\, teams up with police Inspector Robert Curran to solve baffling murders. The sixth book in the series is a novella\, Christmas at the Convent.  Harriet and Curran find a newborn baby in a convent nativity scene. What begins as a desperate search to reunite mother and child quickly spirals into something far more sinister. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nA.M Stuart lives in Melbourne\, but over her life she has travelled extensively and lived in Africa and Singapore\, experiences which she brings to her writing. Before becoming a full-time writer\, she worked as a lawyer across a variety of disciplines including the military and emergency services. Writing as Alison Stuart\, she is also multi-published in historical romance and short stories with settings in England and Australia\, and spanning different periods of history. More info here. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHost Alison Goodman is a Melbourne-based writer of crime\, fantasy and historical fiction. She is the author of nine novels including The Ladies Road Guide to Utter Ruin\, the second book in the Ill-Mannered Ladies series\, which was released in May 2025. The first book in the series\, The Benevolent Society of Ill-Mannered Ladies\, won the 2024 Readers’ Choice Davitt Award and was a Washington Post and an Amazon Best Mystery Book of 2023. Her novels also include the award-winning Lady Helen trilogy\, and EON and EONA\, a New York Times bestselling fantasy duology. Alison holds a PhD focusing on creative writing\, historical research\, and the Regency era\, and is currently working on the third novel in the Ill-Mannered Ladies series. She is fuelled by strong coffee and air-fried chips\, and will travel a long way for a good high tea. \n\n\n\nMen or ‘brothers-in-law’ welcome. \n\n\n\nSun Bookshop stall: Sisters in Crime members receive a 10% discount \n\n\n\nA short Annual General Meeting will follow the event.
