Law Week 2017 logo

For its 11th Law Week event, Sisters in Crime Australia is joining forces with the Sir Zelman Cowen Centre, Victoria University to explore Victoria’s trail-blazing approach as to how sex crimes are treated and how they are monitored through the Victorian Sexual Offences List and the Victorian Register of Sex Offenders. Professor Bronwyn Naylor will interrogate our three eminent panellists: Detective Senior Sergeant Marnie Johnstone, Sergeant Kirei Wall and Belinda Wallington.

Bookings for this event are essential, so to avoid disappointment book your ticket now (details below). Doors open at 6 pm with the panel discussion commencing at 6.30 pm sharp.

Headshot Detective Senior Sergeant Marnie Johnstone

Detective Senior Sergeant Marnie Johnstone, the Officer-in-Charge of the Serious Sex Offender Specialist Response Unit, has 24 years’ service under her belt and a strong background in investigating sexual offences. She has worked with both the Sexual Crimes Squad and the SANO Taskforce, focusing on institutional child sexual abuse. Marnie enjoys reading true crime books – Vikki Petraitis and Anne Rule are her favourite authors. She admits to having watched Law & Order: SVU on more than one occasion.

Headshot Sergeant Kirei Wall

Sergeant Kirei Wall heads a team of Specialist Sex Offence Prosecutors. Over the past 17 years, Kirei has worked in frontline operational duties at St Kilda Police Station, including taking part in undercover operations as a street prostitute. She spent 8 years as a Crime Scene Officer before joining the Prosecutions Division in 2012. Kirei now manages a team of 15 Specialist Sex Offence Prosecutors who appear in both the Magistrates’ and Children’s courts. Her special expertise is in child pornography prosecutions, and the prosecution of rape charges in the Children’s Court. She also lectures to the Prosecutor Training Course. Outside of the police force, Kirei is a keen runner and has notched up four marathons.

Headshot Belinda Wallington

Belinda Wallington, Supervising Magistrate for Sexual Offences, was a specialist criminal lawyer with Slades & Parsons prior to her appointment to the Magistrates’ Court in 2003. Based at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court, she travels every couple of months to sit on the Sexual Offences List and Koori Court in Mildura. Since reading Murder in the Collective while working in a feminist collective at a women’s refuge, crime fiction has been one of her favourite reads. She also enjoys crime shows such as Prime Suspect, Scott & Bailey and The Bridge. She likes her protagonists sassy but flawed.
